Smoked Brats Online: Why Minnesota-Made Is Worth Every Bite
There's a reason smoked bratwurst have been a Midwest staple since the early 1900s — and a big reason why Minnesotans especially can't get enough of them. But finding truly great smoked brats online? That's where most people run into trouble.
You can order brats from a dozen different places on the internet. What you can't easily find is a family recipe that's been perfected over four generations, smoked on real hardwood, and shipped directly from a smokehouse in northern Minnesota. That's what Stittsworth Meats does — and it's why our brats keep ending up in shopping carts from Alaska to Florida.
What Makes a Great Smoked Bratwurst?
Not all brats are created equal. Most of what you'll find at a grocery store is a mass-produced product — inconsistent seasoning, inconsistent smoke, and a casing that's been sitting in a modified atmosphere package for weeks.
A genuinely great smoked bratwurst has:
- Real hardwood smoke — not liquid smoke flavoring or artificial smoke additives
- A balanced spice blend — enough to have character, not so much it masks the pork
- Proper fat content — this is what makes a brat snap when you bite it
- A tight, natural casing — for that satisfying texture and snap
- Consistent smoke penetration — so every bite tastes the same from end to end
These aren't mysterious requirements. They're the same standards Corey and Clay Stittsworth held themselves to when they perfected the original Stittsworth brat recipe in Bemidji, Minnesota in the early 1990s — and the same standards Mychal Stittsworth holds the team to at the Turtle River Smokehouse today.
Stittsworth's Smoked Brat Lineup
We don't make just one brat. We've spent years developing a lineup that covers every taste, every occasion, and every grilling preference.
Original Smoked Brats
The one that started it all. Our classic recipe uses a proprietary blend of spices that's been refined through decades of community events, county fairs, and backyard cookouts across northern Minnesota. This is the brat that built the brand.
Jalapeno Beer Cheddar Brats
Heat, cheddar, and a hint of beer make this one of our most popular flavors year-round. The jalapeño is balanced — enough kick to get your attention, not enough to ruin the brat experience.
Wild Rice & Cheddar Brats
This is a Minnesota original. Wild rice, harvested from northern MN lakes, cooked into a bratwurst. You won't find this at Costco. It's unique, regional, and genuinely delicious — with the wild rice adding a subtle nuttiness and texture that pairs perfectly with hardwood smoke.
Smoked Bacon & Cheddar Brats
Bacon and cheddar in a smoked brat. This one sells itself.
All Beef Prime Rib & Horseradish Brats
For the beef purists. Prime rib seasoning with a horseradish kick — all beef, no pork blend. If someone in your house doesn't eat pork, these are what you put on the grill.
Chicken Alfredo Brats
A curveball. Creamy, mild, and surprisingly great on the grill. These get pulled out at parties where not everyone's a traditional brat person — and they always convert a few skeptics.
How to Cook Smoked Brats Like a Pro
Since our brats are already fully smoked, you have a lot of flexibility in how you cook them. You're not trying to cook the meat through — you're building flavor and texture.
The Classic Grill Method
- Preheat grill to medium heat (about 325-350°F)
- Place brats on the grill, turning every 3-4 minutes
- After 12-15 minutes, you're looking for a deep brown casing with grill marks — not char
- Optional: finish in a beer bath (see below)
Beer Bath (The Minnesota Way)
This is non-negotiable for serious brat enthusiasts. Combine half a can of your favorite beer, sliced onions, and a tablespoon of butter in a foil pan or cast iron. Set it on the grill next to the brats. Once the brats hit the right color, transfer them to the beer bath for 10 minutes. The result: impossibly juicy brats with a sweet, caramelized onion finish.
Pan or Stovetop
Don't have a grill? No problem. Cast iron skillet, medium heat, a little butter or oil. Same approach — just rotate every few minutes until the casing is deep brown. Finish in a covered pan with a splash of beer or water to get some steam going.
Why Order Smoked Brats Online from Stittsworth?
Here's the honest answer: you can get brats from a lot of places online. The question is who you trust with that product.
We're a four-generation family business that's been making the same recipes since 1940. Our USDA-certified smokehouse in Turtle River, MN produces over 100,000 pounds of product a month — but every batch still follows the original family formulas. Our case-ready packaging keeps everything fresh up to 7x longer than standard packaging, so by the time our brats reach your door, they're as close to straight-off-the-smoker fresh as you can get.
We also carry a 94% recommendation rate across 2,199+ Facebook reviews from real Minnesota customers. That's not a marketing claim. That's decades of consistency.
